Google Turns Chrome Into AI Playground With Gemini Integration
Google’s browser already dominates the market with about a 70 per cent share worldwide.
Google has announced new AI features for Chrome, which puts its Gemini assistant at the centre of the browser.
The company is rolling out Gemini, its AI assistant, to help people search, summarise, and complete tasks directly in Chrome.
With the new omnibox tool, users can type questions into the address bar and receive conversational answers without leaving the page. Gemini will also be able to scan open tabs and combine details into one view. Someone planning a trip, for instance, can ask the assistant to gather flights, hotels, and activities into a single itinerary.
The AI will connect Chrome with services such as YouTube and Google Calendar. It will also remember browsing history to provide better context for queries. Features that were once restricted to paid users are now being made free, opening Gemini to millions more.
The most ambitious addition is an agentic browsing assistant. This tool will complete actions inside Chrome, such as filling shopping carts, drafting emails, or copying text into documents. It will run in the background, but stop to confirm before sending messages or making payments.
Other companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have introduced similar agents. However, their tools have been criticised as slow, costly, and sometimes unreliable. Analysts believe Google’s deep integration with Chrome gives it an edge.
Google’s browser already dominates the market with about a 70 per cent share worldwide. By embedding Gemini, the company is positioning Chrome as a powerful hub for AI use, while expanding its influence beyond search.
